Maxillaria in a coconut shell

Maxillaria are mainly native to Central and South America. Different species give off incredibly wonderful scents, such as coconut, cinnamon, vanilla sugar, cocoa or curry. Some Maxillaria have very large flowers, others very small and their colors range from white, yellow, red and even black! All Maxillaria form bulbs and the flowers are located below the foliage. Due to its diversity, it is an incredibly exciting genus and everyone should experience the beguiling scents at least once!!

Maxillaria are very easy to care for. Like all orchids, they prefer a bright spot without direct sunlight. They feel most comfortable at temperatures between 16-20°C. Before watering, the substrate should be slightly dry; waterlogging and extreme dryness should be avoided. If the bulbs are wrinkled, you can water them a little more often. Fertilize twice a month during the growing season from March to September. Every two years, the Maxillaria should be reduced in size and given fresh substrate.
